Weird Science: Hughes Geeks Out
Posted by jc

Release Date: 1985; Run time: 94 minutes
Cast: Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock, Ilan Mitchell-Smith, Bill Paxton, Suzanne Snyder, Judie Aronson, Robert Downey Jr.
Written and Directed by John Hughes

Any John Hughes film is good geek fodder, but Weird Science breaks the kitsch meter with its use of computers and sci-fi effects when compared to the likes of Sixteen Candles or The Breakfast Club. Hughes reportedly wrote the screenplay for this one in two days. You'd never guess it given its Byzantine plot: Inspired by the movie Frankenstein, two teenaged geeks sit down at an Apple Lisa computer and create a woman. They call her Lisa. Hilarity ensues. There's a party, a fast car, and Kelly LeBrock in her underwear. The boys learn how to overcome their insecurity and shyness.

Would Mary Shelley approve? Probably not, but it's worth the watch just to see Bill Paxton turned into a rotund bog-like creature.

Amazon has it on VHS for $9.98 or DVD for $14.99. And if you like Weird Science, Amazon says you'll also like Better Off Dead. (Preference here must go to Better Off Dead).

Also, don't miss this fabulous article by Sarah Hepola with Ilan Mitchell-Smith.
